Edinburgh Tops the List of Best Cities to Launch Start-Ups

Edinburgh has been judged to be the best city in the UK to launch a business start-up, according to a new study by Expert Market.

In reaching their decision, the researchers looked at a number of key factors, including business survival rates, workforce availability, transport links, and the affordability of commercial rental properties.

Bristol came in second place, with London following closely behind in third. One other Scottish city, Glasgow, also made it into the top ten, sitting at number ten on the list. Other top ten cities include Liverpool, Cardiff and Leeds. In total, 43 cities were analysed as part of the research, with Norwich apparently ending up in last place.

According to Expert Market, factors that helped Edinburgh earn its number one spot include its quality tech innovation and positive start-up ecosystem.

“Entrepreneurship is reaching all corners of the country,” said Adelle Kehoe, Head of Research at Expert Market. “It is great to see places like Edinburgh and Bristol being championed as business hubs and this hopefully gives budding business owners a few more options for where to base their start-up. As costs in the capital continue to soar, naturally we will see other cities come to the fore and with fast internet, good office spaces and access to talented staff - it’s clear to see why Edinburgh has been the city of choice for thousands of start-up businesses in the last year.”
